Prelude

"One world ...of peace through music", held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on the evening of December 18, 1998, is a spectacular concert of music and poetry, during which the MC's, Debbie Reynolds and John Moschitta, take you on a journey of musical sensation, from the powerful poetry of Supreme Master Ching Hai adapted to music and performed by Academy and Emmy Award-winning composer Fred Karlin, as well as Peter Boyer, Maria Newman and George Thatcher, to the classic Hollywood scores of Oscar and Emmy Award-winning composer/conductor Bill Conti, along with lively music by Gaelic Storm from the hit movie Titanic, and Alan Jardine of the Beach Boys Family and Friends.

This concert brings together modern greats of the music industry, accompanied by Hollywood's finest 65-piece orchestra and the Pasadena Boys Choir. All of the proceeds from this concert were contributed to a children's fund and hospital. Similarly, the proceeds of other activities sponsored by The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Organization are given to those in need. The concert was one of the Organization's many efforts to try to appease the suffering of the world, and to help those less fortunate .

This concert was held to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the Starlight Children's Foundation.

The Prince

Lyrics by Supreme Master Ching Hai
Music and orchestration by Maria Newman
Conducted by George Thatcher
Suprano: Anne Marie Ketchum

Whirling night.
Fever runs high.
Liquid rhythm, golden tunes,
Trembling senses and fragrant breath!
The bamboo in a garden corner
Sing glorious love songs...
Together, choir frogs around the lotus pond.
And the weeping willows blow elegant kisses.
The aloof pine trees and cool-faced water quiver
In silence.

Darkened firmament,
Shimmering candles,
Now glow with the vibrant power of love.
Time holds still.
And the worn out walkway
forgives all trespassers!

O welcome!
Welcoming the Prince of Grace!
Whose melodious voice's clear as
the sound of a mountain spring,
And whose embracing eyes
Are blue as the water of the peaceful
Azure Coast.

The flowers whisper:
"One would never want to see any other man."

There is So Much Music in the Words of the Poems

Love Melody IV

Poem by Supreme Master Ching Hai
Music and orchestration by Peter Boyer
Conducted by Peter Boyer
Suprano: Kerry Walsh

Yellow flowers, blue flowers,
Walking summer in wild dream,
Counting flowers, calling your name...
Horizon far, rainbow stream...

How many miles to the West side?
How many miles to paradise?
How many miles to your heart?
How many miles to mine?

Spring flowers, May flowers,
Blend four seasons together.
Weave all dried leaves in August,
Sending to you in lieu of letters...

Lonely river, lonely stream,
Walking winter in daydream.
Counting snowfalls, calling your name
Sun died on the hill for night Queen...

How many miles to Summer?
How many miles to Spring?
How many months for one Golden August?
How many days for one Glorious Second?

Lonely mountain, lonely hill....
Finding Autumn in the chill!
Sending the wind to Brannenburg...
Bring memories of August the twelfth.

Rosenheim train, Rosenheim train!
Bring me away from my pain
Bring me home to red wood.
Bring me home to the autumn rain,
Bring me home, where my heart belongs.

The Peace Seeker

Lyrics by Supreme Master Ching Hai
Music and orchestration by Fred Karlin
Conducted by Peter Boyer

The Pasadena Boys Choir

Once upon a time,
A true peace lover wandered around the many worlds
In search of eternal happiness.
She walked over the face of the Earth, the suns,
The moons and the clouds.
At last she found,
That it was all the while hidden in her very heart.
Then she sat down,
And was about to enjoy the new found Bliss,
But suddenly she looked down
And saw countless beings were still groveling in darkness,
For they were searching for happiness without.
Just like her before, erring over millions of ages.
Her tears were then rolling down...
One drop, two drops... and many more...
Each drop became a shining jewel,
And soon the firmament was studded with glittering tears,
Which are the stars today;
They are too shy in the day,
And too restless in the night to go to sleep.
For all peace seekers,
The stars are there to light the Way,
And to remind them of the Compassion of a holy Sage.

A Beautiful Parable
Eternal Happiness Resides Within the Heart

Cannot Do a Thing with My Heart

Lyrics by Supreme Master Ching Hai
Music and orchestration by Fred Karlin
Conducted by Peter Boyer
Excerpt from "The Peace Seeker"
Sopano: Mel Kubik
Background Vocal: Nicole Campbell, Stevie Mercer
Actors: Lauri Johnson, Clarinda Ross

I want to throw away my heart,
It hurts me so much daily,
With every misfortune, with everyone!
In the world full of misery!

Sopano: Mel Kubik

This expensive thing I possess,
That I could never sell, nor throw away!
This little heart of mine!
So little and so fine
Beats enormously
With the world full of misery!

I am going to the Wizard of Oz,
Let him take my heart away!
Won't be hurt any more,
With the world today.
What can I do with my heart?
What can I do with her?
It hurts me every day;
It hurts me every night!

What can I do for the world?
What can I do for my people?
Always full of troubles,
Always full of sorrow!

Background Vocal: Nicole Campbell (left) and Stevie Mercer (right)

My ears listen to musique,
My eyes adore beauty,
My lips sing poetry.
But my heart is full of melancholy!
She wouldn't let me free.

If there is reincarnation,
I am going to be a flower,
A fruit, a tree or a plant.
But never, never,
A human being again!

Farewell Song - Prelude

After the contribution ceremony, composer-conductor Peter Boyer gently took Master's hands and said that he had a little surprise for Her. He then invited Master to sing the Farewell Song - a beautiful song She had composed from Her poem written in Germany in 1978.

To Supreme Master Ching Hai, who is shy in nature, this was more of a shock than surprise. Without any mental preparation or rehearsal, She feared that She might miss the tune and spoil the reputation of Peter Boyer. Also, since Master had been speaking to thousands of people for many days, She worried that "Her voice might shock the violins out of tune".

However, swayed by the persistent requests of Peter Boyer and hostess Debbie Reynolds, and especially the overwhelming longing of the audience, after a brief musical conference, Supreme Master Ching Hai began to sing...

Farewell Song

Lyrics and Music by Supreme Master Ching Hai
Orchestrated and conducted by Peter Boyer
Vocal: Supreme Master Ching Hai

Where, where are you going,
my winter sun?
Won't, won't you miss me
Staying on this side
Of the sea?...

Where, where have you gone to,
my tender moon?
How, how I miss you
Standing on this shore,
Water blue!

I wish we could sail
To the same destination,
I want to break these chains..
Oh, my desperation.

When, when will I see you,
my everything?
Won't someone hold you,
When you wake up crying?

Where, where are you now,
my only one?
Won't someone tell me
If you will ever return?

Munich, '78

For all the refugees in the world.

Supreme Master Ching Hai singing "Farewell Song"

I will forever love you
Through all the worlds,
Through all the lovers,
Through all the beauties,
That you so adore.

You will forever search for
The Love in yonder,
The Love in yourself,
The Love in My Lore,
That you so adore.

The True Love you'll find
Only by My side.
When your journey ends,
I'll send you My Sign,
I'll send you My Love,
I'll send you My Light.

I will forever love you
Through all the worlds,
Through all the mothers,
Through all the beauties,
That you so adore.

Interviews with Concert Coordinators, Performers, and VIPs
One World ... of Peace through Music

On Dec. 18, 1998, at the prestigious Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, the most magnificent concert of the century was held. The reception that followed the concert was another splendid gathering, with the night's superstar, the Supreme Master Ching Hai, being the main focus of the party. Everyone was immersed in the elevating and loving atmosphere, as well as feeling joyful because of the unprecedented success of the Concert. Master cordially thanked the performers for their talented performances and chatted easily with them like old friends. Delightedly, they posed for pictures with Her.

The venue also featured many of Supreme Master Ching Hai's artistic creations, including the Celestial Jewelry, clothing, paintings, and lamps. Many VIPs were amazed at Master's versatile artistic talents and were very interested in Her personally as well. After being introduced to Her paintings and jewelry designs, they commented on Her ability to penetrate into the true nature of phenomena and convey elevating messages through Her art works. Many requested sample booklets and magazines in order to learn more about Master and Her teachings.

Kerry Walsh, a noted singer of new music, who sang Master's poem, "Love Melody IV," composed by Peter Boyer, remarked that she knew little about Master Ching Hai, but was deeply moved throughout the Concert. Reciting a line from "Cannot Do A Thing With My Heart" in the Symphonic Portrait, "The Peace Seeker," she asked, "What can I do for the world? What can I do for my people?" Then she added, "All my life I've tried to do something like Master is doing. I have asked myself, "What can I do to make a change? I am too small to do anything. Now I know that I can become involved with these people to make a contribution. I hope to join in more of these activities in the future. I really feel more satisfied when doing such deeds." Commenting on Master's artwork, she exclaimed, "Unbelievable! I've never seen anything like these before. Wonderful!"

Stephen Kalinish, a poet and songwriter for The Beach Boys' Family and Friends, commented, "She is a sweet person, so wonderful. She has a poetic soul, and is very humble...very humble indeed. She is God's channel, and the love is expressed in language that human beings can understand."

Diana, aunt of the sister singers Carnie and Wendy Wilson from the Beach Boys' Family and Friends, happily talked with our reporter. "She is so talented. I am very happy to be here." Marilyn Wilson, mother of Carnie and Wendy Wilson, said, "She (Master) is a lovely person, very sweet, and very sincere." Both of them (also sisters) said repeatedly, "We can't get over Her."

Randel Kirsch, who plays bass for the Beach Boys' Family and Friends, had watched the entire Concert. He commented, "It was a fun evening. The concept of 'peace through music' is so cool. I watched the entire "Peace Seeker" (composed by Academy Award winner Fred Karlin) with my jaws open. The poems in between (the music) were fantastic!" His wife, mother, and baby son had also seen the show, and the family appeared radiantly happy. He commented that by his participation in this event, he had done the right thing for the world and the next generation.

The event's photographers who were very devoted to their work said that everything was amazingly beautiful that night. They enjoyed the music as well as the paintings and other art works by Master. While being interviewed, they were busily shooting Master's paintings. Kristin, a photographer from "KLM Studio," told us, "I have never met Master before, but after watching the tape 'Walking the Way of Love,' and seeing Her tonight, I agree that She is a wonderful person."
